Guitar (depth of field)
Guitar (depth of field)
This image shows a guitar as the image being photographed, however the short depth of field allows just the lower part of the guitar to be in focus. i love this image because it takes an object with so many different and interesting viewpoints, and turns it into something visually interesting and artistic. By choosing this part of the guitar to be in focus, the viewer looks at the short depth of field in a more significant way.

external image images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSWDbYgrpmq9PJRvO8vUvMHVp81ZbFSviC8WM63XeaFVYrP6UnOThis image also shows depth of field,r however this depth of field is larger becuase the tree is the main focus as well as the leaves, however the houses and setting in the backround are still included in the image. Being shown in this image is a tree during the fall season, which is portrayed by the leave's colors and other characteristics of the objects in the setting. By making the tree itself the main focus in this photograph, moving the camera further away from the object allowed the depth of field to be longer, however still remain in focus.

Depth of field Photography
raindrops.jpg
This is an interesting picture with a short depth of field. This is a short depth of field because the leaves which were closer to the camera, are in focus while the background is not in focus. I find this picture interesting because the leaves and the raindrops are very sharp and defined in the picture. It really shows the detail in the leaf and raindrops dripping from it. This is also an eye catching picture because of the background. I think it is interesting that you can tell it is still raining because of the lines that are made in the background. I like how there is light shining off of the leave which makes it seem more cheerful, but at the same time the background is dark and dreary which gives it more of a gloomy mood. I also think that it is interesting how most of the background is green, which is a perfect match with the leaves, but there are some other colors mixed in with it. The background is blurred just enough so that you can't tell what is behind it.
bench.jpg
This picture, as compared to the last picture, has a long depth of field because it shows the entire bench in focus but the rest of the picture is not in focus. Because of the angle this picture was taken from, it makes the bench look extremely long and stretched. The bench is in sharp focus so that you see all the details on the bench. The thing that stands out the most to me, would be the leaves that have fallen onto the bench. They are purposefully in focus so that the person looking at the photo notices them right away. The bright colors of the leaves are a nice contrast to the bench which is simply gray. The background is blurred but not enough so that you can't tell what it is. The photographer deliberately blurred it just a little so that you can tell what the scene around the bench looked like. It looks like it is on a path surrounded by trees. You can tell there are people walking along the path in the background. The path starts out wide at the bottom of the photo but then starts to come together in the upper right hand corner. This draws your eye upwards.

This image shows a short depth of field because the closer pool ball is in better focus then the one that is further back in the image. It is short depth of field because; only the solid yellow pool ball is in focus. The photograph shows the pool balls in a different perspective in a way we normally wouldn’t view them.

external image LargeDoF03.jpg

This image shows a larger depth of field because the green post that is in focus looks as though it is larger than the building in the background. This photo distorts the sizes of the building but yet you can still make out some of the characteristics of Big Ben in the background which gives the photo a very different view point.

bug.jpg

This image clearly demonstrates a short depth of field. The bug and the broken piece of grass in the foreground are in focus but the rest of the grass is completely blurred and out of focus. The light in the picture comes from the sun in the sky so it is lit from above. This is seen through the darker tones on the underside the piece of grass and the bug. The contrast between the dark colors of the bug with the bright green of the rest of the picture makes the bug the center of focus and the visual pathway starts at the bug and travels down the piece of grass. The composition of the photo is excellent because though usually a picture should not be centered on something, the photographer does so to highlight the features of the bug. By making the rest of the picture not in focus, the photographer is pointing out the little pieces of nature we usually fail to notice.

This picture demonstrates a long depth of field because the whole highway and the sky are in focus.

This picture presents a long depth of field because it makes your eye travel in the path made by the tornado or twister. It brings you all the way down the page and brings you to the doomed, dark clouds looming in the sky. This picture makes me feel scared and worried. The sky sort of looks like it would if the world suddenly came to an end. It looks like it is ready to suck up everything and anything in its path and nothing could slow it down. I belive the author deliberately took the picture at the beginning of the path of drestruction to make the viewer's eye carry around the picture and finally up to the doomed sky.

This is a picture of a short depth of field. The blue rope tied to the dock is clearly the focus of the picture. The background is blurred to put the knot into focus. The crisp and straight line across the right side of the photo also helps draw the eye towards the knot. The bright blue is also a great contrast against the blurry green and white background. The way the rope starts out straight at the top and then moves to where it is messy and then goes to the organized ring rope is interesting. Having the background blurred allows the viewer to really focus in on the details and design of the rope. The photographer’s intent was to draw in on a specific part of the dock and take notice of the intricate design that the rope creates.

The second image of a dock is much different than the first one because it has a long depth of field. The entire dock, even towards the end, is clear and in focus. Even the background which is very distant is also pretty much in focus. The long depth of field draws the eye deep into the picture and even beyond just the dock. Both the long depth of field image of a dock and the short depth of field image of the dock create interesting pieces for the eye to follow because of the structure and design of the images.

horse.jpg
http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/photo-tips/
This photo showcases direct light causing the hard edges of the picture. This depicts a deliberate short depth of field in order to emphasize the eye and the front mane of the chestnut horse. It shows selective focus. The sharp focus is in the foreground in the front hair, mane and eye of the horse with crisp, defined lines. The softer focus is in the mid and background with more hazy, blurry edges of the horse, house and landscape. The frame of this photo is very interesting because the majority of the horse’s face is outside of the edges of the photograph. The point of view of this photograph is eye-level, the camera lens is looking straight forward at the horse’s eye, the focal point of the image. The photo also shows deep space as the landscape reaches into the background. This landscape additionally shows horizontal lines which radiate feelings of calmness. The colors that dominate this photo include the chestnut color of the horses, the green of the grass and the blue-greys of the sky. n1-ns.jpg
This photo shows a long depth of field. Both the boardwalk in the foreground and the city lights and buildings in the background are in focus. The angle of the line of blue lights on the ground creates a visual pathway, and not just one part of the photo is the focal point, this photo has lots of things happening at once. The photographer probably wanted to get the empty benches in the same picture as the buildings of a busy city. They involved a lot of visual aspects in this photo, with the light and the reflection on the water.

This image hasa very short depth of field. That is evident because the only potion of the image that is in focus is the middle third of the photograph. The curved shape of the blade of grass and the water droplets help bring the image together. The eye moves the visual pathway, created by the blade of grass, from the top of the image to the bottom of the image. There is a good amount of contrast in the image. It is clear because of the bright whites in the water droplets, to the deep green under the blade of grass.

This image has a long depth of field. That is clear because everything is in focus from the cliff jumper to where the waves meet the horizon. Also, due to the crisp and varying shades of color there is a fair amount of contrast in the image.

This picture is an example of a short depth of field because the flower petal is in focus but the background is out of focus. The stem with dots draws the viewer’s attention along its length into the other petal which is also out of focus. I like this photo because you can see the veins and hairs on the focal point.
external image dominoes+with+large+depth+of+field.jpg
Opposite the first picture, this image represents a large depth of field. Instead of just the first domino being in focus all of them are, which draws the eye back into the picture both to the left and right. The dominos actual size is also distorted by the point of view.

This is an example of short depth of field, or shallow point of view, because the flower is clearly in focus, as the rest of the background is blurry. This producing a selective depth of field because the photo is part soft (blurry background) and part sharp (flower). Since we know this is a flower, you can tell that the blurriness is really leaves and the stems of the flower. This proves that he picture had to have been taken from a bird's eye point of view looking down on the flower. Another way this short depth of field was accomplished was by zooming in very close on the flower, so much that you can see the dew. The aperture was definitely opened wide in order to completely get the flower only in focus.
external image Long+Depth+of+Field+1.jpg
This photograph is an example of a long depth of field because every aspect of it is in focus. The photo is visually engaging though because there is so much going on, it was most likely taken at eye level. The hay closest to you appears to be larger than all the rest, the farther they go back. This is a result of a long depth of field. The trees also appear to be neverending and becoming smaller as well as the grass. It seems as though the clouds in the front are going to dominate the whole picture because they are larger the closer they are to the camera, this creates a deep space. With the objects being discieving in the photo, a visual pathway is created with all of the different shapes and lines, the eye is automatically drawn towards the back where it looks like the image is continuing on as the objects seem smaller.

The image that I chose is a clear example of a short depth of field. The stems and the blueberries in the foreground are the only thing in the picture that is in focus. While everything else in the background is out of focus. This happens because there are a lot of shadows in the background causing the picture to have a great deal of contrast in it, this is why the picture focuses on only one of the blueberry plants. - Hunter

THis picture was taken from a birds eye view because of the way the circle of the pendant is warped. The chain creates a visual path way by leading your eye down from the top of the picture and onto the focal point of the picture, which is the stone.

I think this is a nice representation on depth of field because even though there is a lot of blurry space it is still obvious what everything is. The blurry stick in the background is obviously the leg to this cot and all the intertwined mess is obviously the bottom nit to the cot. The depth of field here is rather short.

There are mountains in the background with clouds surrounding them and what might be a body of water. The photographer intentionally created a long depth of field because the pictureis of a landscape and they were trying to include the way the road winds around the mountains.

This photo has a long depth of field, since most of the rocks on the jetty are in very crisp focus, even as they get smaller and farther from the camera. This photo has a very interesting visual pathway, as the eye starts at the foreground, which is the beginning of the jetty and then travels all the way down to the end of the jetty. The eye rests on the end of the jetty, where some people and a dog are standing, slightly out of focus. I like how this photo generally does not have very high contrast, but the lightest and darkest values are located on the people at the end of the jetty, which draws the eye to them. The jetty also catches the viewer’s attention because it is made of many warm colors, which add interest by contrasting the cool colors of the ocean and sky in the background. I think the photographer took this picture with a long depth of field in order to accurately convey the texture and length of the jetty. The people at the end are slightly unfocused in order to add a sense of mystery, and make the viewer slightly curious about what they are doing and why they are there.

This photo has a very short depth of field. The pink flower, which is the focal point, is in very sharp focus, while rest of the photo is blurry and out of focus. The flower’s texture is so well captured that the viewer almost wants to reach out and touch the soft-looking petals. The artist chose this depth of field so students can notice the whole scene, but focus mainly on the flower in the foreground. The photographer forces the viewer to notice the minutest details about the flower, in order to further appreciate its beauty.

Dan McAndrews Period 1

The photo depicted below is an example of a short depth of field or a shallow point of view. What makes the statement true is the crisp focal point of the bottle
against a blurred out background. While the focal point of the photograph is on the empty bottle I feel that the surrounding background, although blurred out, really
helps make the photo cohesive in terms of a tone of "emptiness". The contrast between the blended shades of the background, giving it a grayish-monotone appearance,
and the more vibrant crimson accents on the bottle help aid in the intended focal point of the bottle. What also makes this photo interesting is the lighting. It seems that there
is not much natural lighting, due to the cloudy overcast and with that notion, any lighting given is from overhead making the image a little sharper.

external image shallow-depth-of-field_1.jpgThis photo has a short/ shallow depth of field. The one flower in the bottom right corner is in sharp focus and the rest is blurry making it a selective focus. I love the composition in the photo because usually there are objects in the center but I like how it is in the right corner. It makes the image more interesting. The photographer must have been close to the flower because you can see the details in the center easily. The sun is the lighting in the picture, so it is coming from above. There is full scale contrast because there are many whites, grays, and blacks.

external image prague2.jpg
This photo is an example of long depth of field. You are able to see everything in the image clearly. The photo was taken at eye level. The composition of the photo is interesting because the statues on the sides and the lines in the cobblestone are creating a pathway that leads your eye to the buildings in the background. This photo is back lit because a few of statues are black and you can see the sun (light source) in the background.

Lilly Beardsley
external image sdof3.jpg

This photo has a long depth of field because the whole scene continues on forever and the entire scene is also in focus. The photographer clearly did this on purpose because they wanted to capture the full beauty, and essence of the landscape. They achieved this by closing the aperture and then adjusting the shutter speed rather than opening the aperture.

This image is of a police scene. The yellow police tape is in focus and can clearly be read, however, the police lights are all blurry because this photo is an example of a shallow depth of field. It was taken with an open aperture to allow more light into the camera. It is a good image because we do not need the police car to be in focus to know what it is because it is something we can see every day; therefore we know what it is without seeing it accurately. In this particular image it also creates a sense of chaos and danger because that is what is associated with the subject matter

1. Short depth of field

visual journal 4 could not upload when in learning center

The photographer’s intent when he/she deliberately manipulated the depth of field in the image is to
get a closer view of just the baby bird and how innocent and small it is. Also it’s really focused in on
the beak and eyes that are not even open yet. The blurred edges also make you narrow in on the
inside of the nest.We usually never get to see anything like this because of how high nests are and
how rare it is for baby birds to be left alone so he put a really good perspective as if we were the
mother looking down at our child.

  1. Long depth of field

visual journal 4 could not upload when in learning center

The photographer’s intent when he/she deliberately manipulated the depth of field in the image is to get
a long view of the dock to show space and distance of it. In my perspective the long depth of field draws
the eye deeper into the picture to the ocean just beyond the dock because of its structure full view.

This in an example of a large depth of field photo, the railroad tracks are sharp and are in focus. They curve along making your eye follow the tracks way far out into the distance. The rocks surrounding the tracks are very crisp focus, when they get further away from the camera. It’s a very unique interesting photo as it allows your eyes to start looking down at the begging of the tracks which then travels all the way through the path. Just by looking at this photo you cannot tell where the tracks end but far off in the distance it looks like some houses slightly in focus. I like this picture because it really draws your eyes into the picture as if you are there.

In this picture it’s a photo of a short depth of field image. I decided to choose barb wire, in this particular image it’s focused in on one of spike on the barb wire and it’s a very sharp image. The other spikes in the photo are more of a blur and you can tell that who ever took this was just focusing in on that one particular spike. It’s a very unique image, as one if just in focus and everything else is out of focus, it really is distinguishing and eye catching.

This picture shows a long depth of field, in opposition to the short depth of field shown in the picture above. Long depth of field is created when objects
closest to the camera are blurred, and objects farthest away from the camera are in sharp focus. This image maintains a visual interest because the main focus
is the Empire State building in the background. Since this buliding has a high contrast in accordance to the brightness of the sky, the viewer will
automatically look there first. To enhance the importance that the Empire State building brings to this photograph, the photographer decided to use
a long depth of field, and put the building in the background in focus.

This photograph is of a waterfall called Seljandsfoss. The composition pushes the waterfall itself to the far left of the frame, so the crystal clear sky is still viewable in the upper-right hand corner. Because the photo was taken to show the beauty and scale of the waterfall, a large depth of field was applied. This allows for the photo to show everything about the waterfall and its surroundings, which a shallow depth of field would not have allowed. ~Charlotte Chapin
